We’re celebrating the TELUS STORYHIVE Anniversary Documentary Edition premiere with these eight new documentary films—each one created by incredible filmmakers from communities across B.C. and Alberta.

From fresh voices to bold perspectives, these local podcasts capture the creativity and curiosity shaping communities across Canada. Each documentary touches on stories of resilience, community, arts, culture and more. There is something for everyone, and a selection of human stories that are sure to inspire.

Rendering Visions | Ashley Rebecca Laurenson

Ashley Laurenson presents a thought experiment for the Future of the Arts in Fort McMurray. Through a series of interviews, artists from the future will learn about the diversity of artists today throughout Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo as they share their dreams for the future of “Arts Inc.”, an incubator to develop and support artists in Fort McMurray. 

Beauty in a Fall | Natalie Jean Segal

In her toughest adventure yet, Revelstoke mountain guide Julianna Howatt seeks to embrace her true identity as a trans woman following a debilitating struggle with PTSD. After taking a step back from her role in the mountain community, Julianna is now ready to share her story and use her experience to advocate for an inclusive future for the guiding community. Visiting the mountain-scapes that were her livelihood, she will confront her past experiences and the cost of her journey.

Buddy Check for Jesse: Helping Coaches Support Youth Mental Health | Michael David Anthony

Brilliant. Talented. Warm. That's how we remember Jesse Short-Gershman. After Jesse died by suicide at 22, his father, Stu Gershman, decided to open up about mental health in an unlikely place: the locker room. Through Buddy Check for Jesse, Stu encourages youth to check in on each other and themselves, helping coaches raise awareness through the power of sport. Today, Jesse's impact stretches across the country, changing the lives of young athletes in Victoria and sparking a national dialogue.

Burcu's Angels | Ozgun Gunduz

At the heart of Vancouver, Burcu’s Angels is more than just a vintage store—it’s a haven, a stage and a sanctuary. For thirty years, this vibrant space has welcomed outcasts, dreamers and seekers, offering both clothes—and belonging. Owned by Burcu Özdemir, a Turkish queer elder, the store has become a pillar of the community, often described as a “coming out center” for generations of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

Liam & Friends | Chad Blain

Liam & Friends follows Liam Gill—professional snowboarder and proud Dehcho Dene from the Liidlii Kue First Nation—as he carves a new path for Indigenous youth through the power of sport, culture and connection. As a member of the Canadian Halfpipe Team, Liam brings more than just skill to the slopes. He brings a message of self-confidence, identity and pride through his annual program, Liam & Friends, inspiring the next generation one turn at a time.

Survival of the Fittest | Jasper Lowe

George Gemer battled the hardest circumstances a human can face. He survived WWII and was a prisoner of war for five years. This did not crush his human spirit, but it stole his dreams of competing in the Olympics. After his release, George sought refuge in Lethbridge, Canada and began coaching to help his athletes complete the goal he never could. He inspired thousands and left a huge impact on Canadian track and field. At 97 years of age, he chases his dreams.

The Man in the Rectangle | Ali Heraize

James, a struggling actor from Vancouver, assumes the AI-generated identity of a renowned photographer to lead a workshop on staged reality. Tasked with photographing jobs at risk of automation, the participants’ work culminates in an interactive exhibition. As James’ true identity and AI’s role are revealed, they confront questions of authenticity, identity and the fragility of reality. James delivers a final twist, leaving us—and himself—questioning what’s real.
