Coming to Lethbridge on November 15: “Kitsínooki” Documentary Screening and Live Music Event
Hey Lethbridge! Come discover Southern Alberta’s vibrant hip hop scene with a showcase of your community of artists and performers.
On November 15, Lethbridge filmmaker Jerry Morrison and his team are celebrating the official premiere of Kitsínooki, a documentary funded in the TELUS STORYHIVE Indigenous Storyteller Edition.
As featured on the Event Webpage, Kitsínooki, meaning "You See Me" in Blackfoot, is a powerful documentary crafted by Indigenous creators that shines a light on Southern Alberta's exciting hip hop scene. Filmed on Treaty 6 territory, specifically in the areas of Lethbridge and Brocket, this film dives deep into Morrison’s experiences growing up in the local area, capturing stories of resilience, transformation and artistic expression.
The celebration on November 15 kicks off at 7 p.m. at the Old Firehall #1 in Lethbridge. Guests will enjoy the premiere of the short documentary, meet the filmmakers and performers behind the film in a Q&A and enjoy live musical performances from Javier Escuela, Jerry Jack, Danica Sommer and Lucy Waa.
Through the voices of local hip hop artists, Kitsínooki reveals the strength of those who’ve faced challenges like racism, addiction, poverty and trauma. These artists have risen above these struggles, using hip hop as a means to break cycles and channel their pain into powerful music. By mentoring future generations, they aim to create change and inspire others to heal through creative expression. This documentary celebrates the spirit of community, culture and the enduring influence of art.
